Purpose: The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia is a foundation under public law, entirely funded by the federal government. It fulfils a subsidiary role, complementing the cultural promotion activities of the cantons and municipalities. Pro Helvetia is responsible for projects of nationwide significance.

Pro Helvetia is mandated by the Swiss Confederation to promote artistic creation in Switzerland, contribute to cultural exchange at home, promote the dissemination of Swiss culture abroad and foster cultural outreach. The foundation makes its own independent decisions about what it should promote.

Pro Helvetia supports artistic creation from Switzerland with an eye to diversity and taking into account its impact, both national and international. It supports projects that help to create and disseminate artistic works, or contribute to artistic exchange between Switzerland’s language regions or to arts outreach. As a national foundation, Pro Helvetia makes grants only to works and projects by cultural practitioners or institutions which enjoy recognition beyond their own regions.

Promotion focuses: The Arts Council supports projects in the areas of the visual arts, music, theatre, dance, literature and society, as well as multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary projects.

• Literature and Society: work grants, publications, translations, events (reading tours,festivals, exhibitions)
• Music: compositions, recordings, world premiers, tours
• Theatre: productions, guest performances, tours
• Dance: productions, guest performances, tours
Interdisciplinary: work grants, festivals, presentations

The funding of the Swiss Arts Council is bound to criteria of quality and the Swiss law. These are described in the guidelines for applicants and the rules, which can also be found at Pro Helvetia’s web page.

Pro Helvetia maintains a network of offices abroad to support it in its task of promoting Swiss culture throughout the world. In collaboration with the liaison offices in Cairo, Johannesburg, New Delhi and Shanghai the Arts Council offers studio and research residencies.
