Swiss Youth Music Competition (SJMW)
youth music competition
Foundations
Categories: Rock/Pop/Chanson, classical music, jazz
Regions: All regions
Purpose: From the outset, the Swiss Youth Music Competition Foundation has focused on discovering talent and promoting music among the general public. The competition therefore serves primarily to motivate children and young people to engage intensively and actively with music.
Classica: The classical competitions are open to children and young people aged 8 to 22. They take place in the categories of solo instrument, singing and chamber music, with the solo instruments alternating every two years. The aim of these competitions is to motivate children and young people and give them the opportunity to engage intensively with their instrument and music as part of their preparation for the competition. A competent jury of experts accompanies the Entrada and the Finale. The Entrada competitions take place in spring at several locations throughout Switzerland. All first prize winners of the Entradas are admitted to the Finale, which takes place a few weeks later at music centres that change annually.
Composition: The composition competition is aimed at children and young people who want to compose and perform their own music. The scores submitted will be evaluated by a jury of experts. The most interesting entries will be performed in front of an audience at the final concert.
FreeSpace: FreeSpace offers the opportunity to promote creative and interdisciplinary entries that do not fit into the existing categories. FreeSpace creates a space for music and performance in which experimental elements, improvisation, crossover and electronic music also have their place. A competent jury of experts selects the most interesting entries, which are presented in a concert during the final round.
Jazz&Pop: The Jazz&Pop competition covers the categories of jazz, improvised music, pop, rock, hip-hop and electronic music. Also the Jazz&Pop competition offers young musicians the opportunity to compete with others. The competition consists of two rounds. The jury is made up of experts.
Promotion focuses: Target group: The SJMW's annual music competition, which is the only national competition of its kind, is aimed at young amateurs aged between 8 and 20 (or 22 for singers).
Exclusion criteria: Young people over the age of 20 (or 22 for singers). The reference year is the year in which the competition takes place.
